History of the International Conference on Plastination


The Birth Place of Plastination


In 1977 Gunther von Hagens invented the process that he called Plastination while working as an anatomist at the University of Heidelberg. Ever since then, many applications have been derived from this unique process.


The International Society for Plastination

The International Society for Plastination was founded in 1986 in San Antonio, Texas. Its functions are as follows:

  • Identify an international community of scientists and technologists interested in plastination
  • Compile a list of all laboratories involved in plastination, including a description of the techniques being practiced at each institute
  • Serve as a forum for the exchange of information about plastination
  • Publish the Journal of the International Society for Plastination
  • Organize and conduct meetings and workshops
  • Define plastination as an area of professional activity and provide a means of learning and practicing plastination as a career
